AMC AMX Spirit, Volvo 242/240, Bertone Turbo USA models, and the Volvo 260 series

AMC AMX Spirit (1978-1983) is one heck of a ride, and they didn't churn out too darn many of 'em even though it was an American behemoth sellin' these babies in the US of A. Now, they didn't exactly whip up a whole bunch, considerin' AMC Motors went belly up right after.

(I wonder if this is an American mafia in a high-speed chase scene?)

Now ain't that a lineup that'll make any Texan car enthusiast holler? These machines are the real deal, each with its own dash of flair and a touch of that American spirit. From the roaring power of the AMC AMX Spirit to the sleek style of the Volvo 242/240, and don't forget the Bertone Turbo USA models that'll leave you grinnin' like a possum eatin' sweet taters.    (That's what an American Volvo 240 police car looked like in Fairfax County back in the 80s)

And let's not overlook the Volvo 260 series, a true classic that's stood the test of time like a steadfast lone star. With their own unique twists, these cars paint a picture of the open road, big skies, and the boundless spirit of the Lone Star State.

Volvo had that famous Italian designer, Bertone, working on it, and the American model was dubbed the "Californiacar." At first, it was aimed at the California market, not just the USA. Italians are also known for their involvement in various mafia activities.

I reckon I caught a glimpse of this car in your typical B-class Hollywood action flick from the '90s, where them villains were crazier than a sack of hornets, and the movie itself was louder than a bullhorn. My sister, bein' a whole five years older than me, had rented and bought some movies that I started watchin'. Things got pretty gruesome and bloody 'fore momma put a stop to it. I surely recall that classic AMC Spirit sports car. Or now, I might be stretchin' the truth a mite, 'cause I reckon this might've been somethin' I cooked up when I read about the car for the first time. But ain't it just right to think that an AMC Spirit fits like a glove in a film like that, with its fierce headlights, fat wide wheels, and flames on the hood?

Now, the American Volvo 240 242 (USA models 1978-1985) is another car that slots right into those loud Hollywood flicks. While the AMC Spirit AMX only showed up in a handful of chosen American films, those American Volvo 240s were all over the place. Which, in truth, is kinda odd, 'cause Americans usually stick to their own rides in their movies.

Unlike the boxy European version, the American Volvo 240 had a fierce grill and some mean American lights. That's why the car could be seen as both a real-deal American mafia mobile and a legit European car for the show-offs. It kinda looked like the best of both worlds, probably not so great when you think about what the American mafia's really up to, but also thinkin' a bit 'bout what the car scene's like, which is definitely a bit flashy.

Somethin' I maybe should've kept to myself, 'cause, truth be told, I've been a bit of a show-off myself, while also writin' a whopping big show-off blog.

What I was talkin' 'bout with that Volvo 240 and its mix of mafia and show-off culture, well, that just lines it up like a bullseye as the ride for them classic American gigolos, pimps, adult film directors, and producers in Hollywood and California, representin' that quintessential 80s-90s scene in the good ol' US of A.

Y'all readers of this blog probably know darn well that Volvo is Swedish, no doubt about it. So, what does that bring to mind? Swedish sin! Them first-ever dirty flicks from 'bout the 60s and 70s, like "I Am Curious (Yellow)" and the Stockholm Syndrome, come to mind. And it's fittin' as a fiddle that the Volvo 240 was put together in the Netherlands instead of right in Sweden. It's like a puzzle piece fallin' into place, makin' the whole picture even clearer. Down in the Netherlands, where that car's put together, happens to be the place where you'll find the world's most famous Red Light district.

I remember seein' two Toyota Hiace MK2 s parked in a garage belonging to some mechanics who lived just down the road from where I grew up. As for the Toyota Liteace, someone I know had one back in the early '80s. The Liteace MK2 is a different kind of vehicle compared to the Hiace MK2, but they look similar enough that I reckon they belong together in this post. My parents’ friends also had a Toyota Hiace in the '90s. Oddly enough, the fella had the same name as the guy who drove the Liteace back in the early '80s. The Toyota Hiace is known as a cool classic camper van, perfect for goin' on holidays. I once spotted a 1985 model for sale down in Grenland in the old Telemark county, and it was covered in stickers from the orienteering event Sørlandsgaloppen. Panhard and Levassor

Panhard an’ Levassor  or as folks call it, Panhard et Levassor  was a French car brand, one of the first in the world right alongside Mercedes. It got its start back in 1887, just a year after Benz rolled out its first car in 1886. Later on, Panhard an’ Levassor became part of Citroën, while its truck division went over to Renault. Now, Panhard stuck around as part of Renault’s military ACMAT trucks (which I’ve written about in my blog for gearheads) all the way up till 2018. After that? Well, it’s history. But lemme tell ya, those Panhard an’ Levassor cars from about 1900 to the 1930s? Man, those are some badass vintage rides. “Drive a Panhard et Levassor, and you’re the king of the classic car meets!” '

Chevrolet Bel Air from the 1950s and Mercedes-Benz from the 1920s–1940s!

I first got introduced to the Chevrolet Bel Air by a buddy back in grade school. He brought a car magazine with him, and it had some real nice photos of the Bel Air. This same guy lived down the street from us, and their yard was full of Mercedes and Volkswagens just sittin' around. None of 'em were much good or anything fancy, not really antiques either. This was back in the '90s, and the cars were maybe from the '60s at most. But they did have one genuine classic, a badass Mercedes from the 1920s or '30s. One day, I noticed they’d cleared that Mercedes out of their garage. They were fixin' to expand the property and put part of it up for sale. A good while later, that car shows back up, hauled in on a trailer, and lookin’ absolutely mint! I reckon they’d taken that whole ride apart and restored every piece. The neighbor was a mechanic, after all. No idea where that car is now, but I sure hope it’s still cruisin’ around as one fine piece of vintage machinery! M...
