Soviet, East German, and Eastern European Lada 1500 Police Cars

I’ve written about these cars before on my gearhead blog, back then referring to them as the Lada 2100 series and the Lada Riva. Though the original Norwegian and Nordic name for this car is more commonly Lada 1500, as most folks here in Norway know. Or Fiat 1500, which was the name of the original model since the car was originally made by Fiat.

In this post, you’ll see pictures of Lada 1500 police cars from various years and nationalities. And if there was ever a truly dreadful symbol of dictatorships, it was the sight of their police cars, representing the nauseating abuse of power over their people. Funny how these regimes were also running Russian cars of such awful quality. Back then, folks had to sit on a waitlist for at least 10 years just to buy something as lousy as a Lada.

Russian police cars would definitely make cool vintage rides (even if driving one these days would probably raise some eyebrows). If it weren’t for the invasion of Ukraine, I could totally picture rolling up to a real vintage car meet in one or joining a classic car parade. These cars are relics of rough quality, showing real wear from heavy use and the spotlight as symbols of Russian, East German, and other Eastern European police forces. Owning one preserves a piece of history that’s as gritty as it is iconic.
