IL Tempo Gigante — now that’s Norway’s own big‑time folk‑hero of a hot‑rod, loved by dang near everybody up there, especially the die‑hard car folks. Kjell Aukrust sketched her out back in the late ’60s, and she got made immortal in that 1975 movie.

Then in ’76, Ivo Caprino went all‑in and built a full‑scale version, sittin’ on a 1966 Cadillac ambulance chassis with the license plate BL 50000. She might look like somethin’ straight outta the 1920s or ’30s, but truth is she’s a child of the ’60s and ’70s — kinda like those Panther De Ville and Excalibur Phaeton rigs from the same era. Panther De Ville even showed up in them Cruella De Vil movies in ’96 and 2000.

You could compare her to them Mercedes Gazelle replicas from the ’70s too — but honestly, IL Tempo Gigante is bigger, badder, louder, and meaner. No point comparin’ her to foreign junk when she’s in a league of her own.

The bodywork came from Ermanno Martinuzzi, the tech from Jan Michelsen, Odd Høie, and Svein Martin Pedersen. The details and woodwork were done by Ivo Caprino, Bjarne Sandemose, and Charles Patey. And the design? That’s Aukrust and Caprino together, at least for the full‑scale beast we’re talkin’ about here.

Under the hood she’s runnin’ a Chevrolet Big Block 454 V8 — 7.4 liters, 540 horsepower, 400 kilowatts. She weighs 1550 kilos, seats two, and has a total allowed weight of 1800. She’ll do 0–100 in six seconds, and the claimed top speed is 324 km/h — though the highest measured speed is 225 km/h.

That big number comes from the old turbine engine she used to have — 1060 horsepower, 790 kilowatts. She originally had an 8‑liter V8, but that got swapped for the Chevy Big Block in 1982 after Remo Caprino met Niki Lauda at the Geneva Motor Show.

The turbine ain’t used anymore ’cause she was loud enough to wake the dead — even the V8 alone hits 120–130 decibels. With both engines together, she could’ve pushed out around 1600 horsepower and 1190 kilowatts.

So yeah, partner — for somethin’ built back in 1976, IL Tempo Gigante is one downright EXTREME piece o’ machinery.”

Ford Edsel 1958-60!

     Ford Edsel — now those cars were somethin’ else, loud, wild and downright badass. They’re ’bout as close as Ford Motor Company ever got to matchin’ GM’s Cadillac Eldorado, those big ol’ late‑’50s gull‑wing cruisers. Problem was just that the Edsel itself came loaded with more quirks and troubles than a rattlesnake in a mailbox. You could kinda compare it to the European Ford Sierra from the ’80s — same deal, whole heap of issues. I’ve talked ’bout that one before. My old man drove one all through the ’90s and then some. Worst model they ever made, and lemme tell ya, growin’ up in that thing was rough — smelled like dust and gasoline on every damn trip. And my dad, who grew up in the ’50s and used to care ’bout cars back in the day, he never had a kind word for the Edsel either. He knew it was trouble from the start. And he’s admitted more than once that my childhood Sierra wasn’t worth a plugged nickel either. I also wrote recently ’bout an old Model A Ford he grew ...

Hino 1300 and Hino 900 Contessa

Hino 1300 og Hino 900 Contessa – now those are some damn cool classic rides outta Japan, worth their weight in pure gold. They were designed by none other than Giovanni Michelotti himself, and both the man’s name and the way those cars look are just downright classy. I ain’t ever seen one of ’em here in Norway, and it’d be crazy awesome if somebody went ahead and imported a few. They were built in Japan, New Zealand, and even Israel.

De Dietrich and Dietrich Lorraine!

  De Dietrich og Dietrich Lorraine – now that there’s a car brand from way over in Alsace-Lorraine in France. They were buildin’ cars under license from Amedee-Bolee back in the day. And in 1902, none other than Ettore Bugatti himself put together a whole mess of brand-new cars for De Dietrich. After a while they went by the name Dietrich Lorraine instead. They were runnin’ them early automobile races in the first years of the 1900s. Later on they started makin’ all sorts of mighty fine, fancy automobiles for high society folk — real upper-crust rides — but the whole outfit went belly-up in 1935.
